Coveo integrates with websites, Content Management Systems (CMS) and digital experience platforms to make website pages, assets, and metadata searchable and relevant. Coveo works alongside the target platform so teams can continue authoring content in the system they already use.

This article helps developers evaluate how Coveo fits into a website or content management platform implementation.

What Coveo powers in these platforms

Coveo retrieves content and metadata from a CMS through a packaged integration or a configured source. Coveo stores the content in an index, where Coveo-powered search interfaces can retrieve relevant items alongside content from other systems. The CMS remains the system for authoring and managing content, while Coveo provides the search and relevance layer.

Use cases

  • Make website pages and assets discoverable alongside content from other enterprise systems.

  • Preserve metadata so users can filter and sort search results.

  • Deliver relevant search experiences without replacing the CMS authoring workflow.

Typical integration pattern

The typical integration pattern for websites and content management systems is to use a generic Coveo source, like the Sitemap source, to crawl and index pages, assets, metadata listed in the sitemap file and, optionally, in the pages themselves. Use a dedicated integration when one is available.

A Coveo Atomic search interface can then be added to the website to send search requests to the Coveo Search API and analytics data to the Coveo Platform, so users can search the website content and Coveo can improve relevance over time.

How Coveo integrates with content management systems

1

The Coveo Sitemap source crawls the items listed in the configured sitemap; use a Coveo Web source when no sitemap is available.

2

The Coveo Atomic search interface sends requests to the Coveo Search API. The Search API returns results and AI-generated answers to the interface. An alternative way to query the Coveo index is through an MCP client–Coveo MCP Server connection. See AI assistants and agents for more information.

3

The Coveo Atomic search interface sends analytics data to the Coveo Platform, where it can support machine learning models that improve relevance.
