You can integrate SharePoint Online with Coveo to index SharePoint and OneDrive content and make it searchable in secure Coveo-powered experiences.

## About SharePoint Online

[SharePoint Online](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/sharepoint/collaboration) is Microsoft's cloud service for creating sites, managing files, and collaborating on content.

SharePoint Online also provides access to OneDrive content and other Microsoft 365 collaboration features.

## Why use Coveo with SharePoint Online?

Connect your SharePoint Online tenant to Coveo so users can find relevant enterprise content alongside content from other systems.

* Index SharePoint sites, lists, libraries, and OneDrive content in Coveo.

* Preserve SharePoint permissions so users only find content they can access.

* Combine SharePoint Online content with content from other [sources](https://docs.coveo.com/en/246.md).

## Recommended integration architecture

The Coveo SharePoint Online source authenticates to a SharePoint Online tenant through an Azure Active Directory application, shown as a separate authentication component in the diagram.
The source uses Microsoft Graph, CSOM, and REST to retrieve SharePoint content, metadata, and permissions for indexing in the Coveo Platform.

## Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have the following:

* A SharePoint Online tenant with sites, lists, libraries, or OneDrive content to index.

* A [Coveo organization](https://docs.coveo.com/en/185.md) with the [privileges](https://docs.coveo.com/en/228.md) required to create and manage [sources](https://docs.coveo.com/en/246.md).

* Either a client certificate and an Azure Active Directory application with the required permissions and tenant-wide admin consent for app authentication, as described in [the app authentication prerequisites](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1739.md#app-authentication-using-certificate-prerequisites).

* Or a SharePoint Online crawling account with appropriate roles and permissions for user delegated access using OAuth 2.0, as described in [Create a SharePoint Online Crawling Account With Permissions](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3252.md).

## Integrate SharePoint Online with Coveo

Follow these steps to connect a SharePoint Online source to your Coveo organization and verify that content is indexed securely.

### Step 1: Choose an authentication method

Choose app authentication using a certificate or user delegated access using OAuth 2.0 for the SharePoint Online source.
Review [the SharePoint Online authentication and site access options](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1739.md#authentication-and-site-access) to select the method that matches your access and throttling requirements.

### Step 2: Add and configure the SharePoint Online source

Follow [Add a SharePoint Online source](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1739.md) to create the source, provide the authentication details, and select the SharePoint Online or OneDrive content to index.

### Step 3: Index your SharePoint Online content

[Build the source](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2039.md), then use the [Content Browser](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2053.md) to confirm that the expected items are [indexed](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204.md).
Test the source with representative users to verify that content security reflects the permissions configured in SharePoint Online.

### Step 4: Create source mappings and fields

Create the required [source mappings and fields](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1640.md) to index the metadata you want to use in search experiences.

## Considerations

* **SharePoint Online and SharePoint Server use different sources**

Use a [SharePoint Server source](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2061.md) to retrieve on-premises SharePoint content.

* **Authentication affects throttling and access**

App authentication using a certificate provides a higher throttling rate limit and supports parallel source updates.
User delegated access using OAuth 2.0 can limit access to specific sites but is more prone to throttling.

* **Content and security scopes must be configured independently**

The source's **Content to index** settings determine which sites and items Coveo retrieves.
The source's **Content security** settings determine how Coveo applies access permissions to indexed items.

## What's next?

* See [source update schedules](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1933.md) to configure when your SharePoint Online source updates.

* See [SharePoint Online source leading practices](https://docs.coveo.com/en/n8ub0545.md) to optimize indexing performance and content freshness.

* See [Website content](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q92f3597.md) and [AI assistants and agents](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q9ad0472.md) for integration patterns to surface your indexed content.

* See [Integration documentation directory](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q7ki1127.md) to find other systems whose content you can [index](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204.md) in Coveo.
