You can integrate Sitecore XP/XM with Coveo to index Sitecore content and permissions and power relevant search experiences.
Access the [complete Coveo for Sitecore documentation](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2709.md) for detailed installation, configuration, indexing, and search implementation guidance.

## About Sitecore XP/XM

[Sitecore XP and XM](https://doc.sitecore.com/) are content management and digital experience platforms for managing websites and their content.
Sitecore XP provides additional experience management capabilities, while Sitecore XM focuses on content management.

## Why use Coveo with Sitecore XP/XM?

Help [visitors](https://docs.coveo.com/en/nbub9475.md) find relevant Sitecore content while your teams continue to manage that content in Sitecore.

* Index Sitecore items and metadata in Coveo.

* Apply Sitecore permissions so users only find content they can access.

* Use Coveo relevance capabilities to improve search experiences as your content and requirements evolve.

## Recommended integration architecture

The Coveo for Sitecore package acts as a bridge between Sitecore XP/XM and the [Coveo Platform](https://docs.coveo.com/en/186.md).
During [indexing](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204.md), the package retrieves Sitecore items and sends them to the Coveo Platform Push API.
When a Coveo Atomic search interface is used in Sitecore, it sends search requests to the Coveo Search API and sends analytics data to the Coveo Platform.

The following diagram shows the recommended integration components and their interactions.

![Sitecore XP and XM integration diagram | Coveo](https://docs.coveo.com/en/assets/images/integrations/sitecore-xpxm-integration-diagram.svg)

| 1 | The Coveo for Sitecore package connector sends Sitecore items to the Coveo Platform using the Coveo Push API. |
|---|---|
| 2 | The Coveo Atomic search interface sends requests to the Coveo Search API. The Search API returns results and AI-generated answers to the interface. An alternative way to query the Coveo index is through an MCP client–Coveo MCP Server connection. See [AI assistants and agents](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q9ad0472.md) for more information. |
| 3 | The Coveo Atomic search interface sends analytics data to the Coveo Platform, where it can support machine learning models that improve relevance. |

## Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have the following:

* A Sitecore XP or XM instance running a version and update level listed in [Supported Sitecore versions and dependencies](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2512.md).

* A [Coveo organization](https://docs.coveo.com/en/185.md) with the [privileges](https://docs.coveo.com/en/228.md) required to configure and activate the integration and manage its [sources](https://docs.coveo.com/en/246.md), as described in [Coveo for Sitecore configuration and activation options](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3150.md).

* The latest Coveo for Sitecore package matching the Sitecore version, available from [Coveo for Sitecore releases and downloads](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2274.md).

* A Sitecore administrator account for the environment where you install the package and a Coveo user with the privileges required to configure the package. The installation requirements are listed in [Coveo for Sitecore installation procedures](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3149.md).

## Integrate Sitecore XP/XM and Coveo

Follow these steps to install and activate the productized Coveo for Sitecore integration.

### Step 1: Install and activate Coveo for Sitecore

Follow [Coveo for Sitecore installation guide](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2219.md) to install, configure, and activate the package for the Sitecore deployment.

### Step 2: Index your Sitecore XP/XM content

Follow [Update your search indexes](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2426.md) to build the source by rebuilding the Sitecore search indexes from the Command Center.

### Step 3: Select the fields to index

In the Command Center, select the Sitecore fields to index.
The Command Center automatically creates the corresponding source mappings and fields in the Coveo Platform.
See [About the Indexing Manager](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2566.md) for details.

### Step 4: Build the search interface

1. Confirm that Coveo Atomic is the right approach for the Sitecore search experience by following [Choose the right approach](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3368.md).

1. If applicable, follow [Atomic getting started documentation](https://docs.coveo.com/en/atomic/latest/#where-do-i-start) to start building the Coveo Atomic search interface.

   > **Tip**
   >
   > Create your search interface project using the [npm create @coveo/ui](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q8qh2338.md) command line tool.

## Considerations

* **Sitecore version and deployment model**

Sitecore XP/XM versions and deployment models have different compatibility, installation, and configuration requirements.
Always follow the procedures for the supported version.

* **Content and permission scope**

The content, fields, and permissions you choose to [index](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204.md) affect the search experience and the resources required for [indexing](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204.md).
Validate the scope in a non-production environment before publishing the experience.

## What's next?

* Validate your content is indexed properly using the [**Content Browser**](https://platform.cloud.coveo.com/admin/#/orgid/content/browser/) ([platform-ca](https://platform-ca.cloud.coveo.com/admin/#/orgid/content/browser/) | [platform-eu](https://platform-eu.cloud.coveo.com/admin/#/orgid/content/browser/) | [platform-au](https://platform-au.cloud.coveo.com/admin/#/orgid/content/browser/)).

* See [Index Sitecore XP/XM content](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3088.md) to customize your indexing configurations.

* [Tune the relevance](https://docs.coveo.com/en/3371.md) of your implementation.

* See the [integration directory](https://docs.coveo.com/en/q7ki1127.md) for other Coveo integration opportunities.
