# Logical index
A {doctitle} is a data structure that securely stores content [items](https://docs.coveo.com/en/210/) of a given [organization](https://docs.coveo.com/en/185/), enabling fast retrieval when they match a [query](https://docs.coveo.com/en/231/).
Typically, Coveo organizations operate with just one index.
In larger deployments, Coveo supports the use of multiple indexes within the same organization, called _logical indexes_.
This approach speeds up [indexing](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204/) and [query](https://docs.coveo.com/en/231/) response time, and ensures proper separation of search results.
