# Persisting tracking identifier
A {doctitle} is a unique identifier assigned to a user's device when they visit a Coveo-powered search page.
It's typically used to recognize the device during later visits, even after it has been restarted, to track the user journey and allow for improving the user experience.

A persisting tracking identifier can be a [first-party cookie](https://docs.coveo.com/en/mbeg8404/), a [local storage](https://docs.coveo.com/en/mbeh0288/) identifier, or a [client ID](https://docs.coveo.com/en/lbjf0131/).
