# Seed product
A {doctitle} is a product that's used as a reference point to generate recommendations in a [recommendation slot](https://docs.coveo.com/en/o9b80563/) powered by a [seeded strategy](https://docs.coveo.com/en/o9ge0347/).
This is the equivalent of the product being viewed by one of your customers.

For example, if you're using a recommendation slot to recommend additional products on a [product detail page (PDP)](https://docs.coveo.com/en/n8ad7392/), the product being viewed on the PDP is the seed product.
Similarly, if you're using a recommendation slot to recommend products on a cart page, the products in the user's cart are the seed products.

For a [seeded strategy](https://docs.coveo.com/en/o9ge0347/) to work, one or more seed products must be passed in requests to the Commerce API to generate recommendations.
