# User name
A [Coveo Analytics](https://docs.coveo.com/en/182/) {doctitle} is the name of an [authenticated](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2120/) user (for example, their first and last names) who performs an action that results in an [event](https://docs.coveo.com/en/260/).
The user name is defined in an authentication provider (such as Google, Microsoft, or Salesforce) and can be [anonymous](https://docs.coveo.com/en/m5ki3986/) if the user isn't [authenticated](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2120/) in the user interface.

The user name is distinct from the [user ID](https://docs.coveo.com/en/268/), which is an identifier.
