# User ID
A [Coveo Analytics](https://docs.coveo.com/en/182/) user ID is an identifier which is automatically attributed to a user who performs an action that results in an [event](https://docs.coveo.com/en/260/).
For an [authenticated](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2120/) user, this is a human-readable identifier (typically the user's email address).
For an [anonymous](https://docs.coveo.com/en/m5ki3986/) user, it defaults to the [client ID](https://docs.coveo.com/en/lbjf0131/).
If a [client ID](https://docs.coveo.com/en/lbjf0131/) isn't available, it defaults to the [visitor ID](https://docs.coveo.com/en/273/).

The user ID is distinct from the [user name](https://docs.coveo.com/en/269/), which is an actual name.
