# Metadata
{doctitle} refers to a set of at least one key-value pair that provides specific information about an [item](https://docs.coveo.com/en/210/).
To be indexed by a [source](https://docs.coveo.com/en/246/), a piece of metadata must be [mapped](https://docs.coveo.com/en/217/) to a [field](https://docs.coveo.com/en/200/).
The [metadata](https://docs.coveo.com/en/218/) is then stored in the [index](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204/) and can be used to filter or search for content in a Coveo [search interface](https://docs.coveo.com/en/2741/).
