# Crawler
A {doctitle} is a Coveo module that scans [items](https://docs.coveo.com/en/210/) to [index](https://docs.coveo.com/en/204/) and extracts their contents.

If an item is secured, the crawler extracts the [permissions](https://docs.coveo.com/en/223/) from the secured enterprise system, and saves them as item [metadata](https://docs.coveo.com/en/218/) (see [Content Security](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1779/) and [Coveo management of security identities and item permissions](https://docs.coveo.com/en/1719/)).
