# Query ranking expression
A {doctitle} (QRE) is a function which compares the unpaginated result [items](https://docs.coveo.com/en/210/) of a [query](https://docs.coveo.com/en/231/) against a [Coveo query syntax](https://docs.coveo.com/en/181/) expression, and applies a static modifier to the ranking score of the matching items.
